LIC files complaint against Suruchi Sangh for 21 cottahs landgrab

A dispute has emerged over land used by Suruchi Sangha in Kolkata after officials of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) approached Alipore Police Station alleging that the club has occupied 21 kathas of LIC-owned property. According to the complaint, the land has been used for Suruchi Sangha’s Durga Puja and other activities for several years, and LIC has now sought recovery of the property.

LIC officials alleged that the entire plot had been enclosed and that a club building had been constructed on the land without authorization. They further claimed that a three-storey structure containing multiple bedrooms had been built on the property. According to the complaint, the land belongs to LIC, and questions have now been raised regarding land usage rights, lease arrangements and administrative permissions associated with the site.

Suruchi Sangha is widely known for organizing its annual Durga Puja and has long been associated with former minister Aroop Biswas and his brother Swarup Biswas. The land dispute surfaced amid ongoing controversy surrounding the club following the arrest of Swarup Biswas and allegations involving the organization. LIC officials stated that previous attempts had been made to recover the land and that legal proceedings had also been initiated in the past, but the property was not recovered.

The issue has also coincided with local unrest around the club premises. Residents allegedly vandalized parts of the Suruchi Sangha premises in New Alipore, while posters appeared carrying messages critical of the Biswas brothers and calling for accountability. Allegations have also been raised regarding the presence of government-supplied materials, including drinking water bottles and sarees, within premises linked to the club. No official decision has been announced regarding the continuation of this year’s Durga Puja celebrations at the site.
